Installing a skill or an MCP server is a switching decision like any other: you are granting a third-party package standing influence over your agent. The evaluation frame this site applies to tools applies here unchanged, and Skillselion happens to surface the three signals that frame needs on one row.
Signal one: usage you cannot stage
Skills are ranked by installs reported by the skills.sh registry. On the 28 July 2026 snapshot the top three were Find Skills by vercel-labs at 3 million installs, Frontend Design by anthropics at 708,000, and Grill Me by mattpocock. The published median across the top 600 is 159,314 installs, which gives you a concrete calibration point: a skill five orders of magnitude below the median is an experiment, not an ecosystem.
Signal two: maintenance, stated as a date
79 percent of the 600 most-installed skills had a source-repository update within 30 days of the snapshot; for MCP servers the figure is 87 percent. That makes staleness legible: when four out of five comparable packages moved this month and yours last moved in spring, that gap is the answer.
MCP servers are ranked by GitHub stars instead of installs, and the site says why: registries do not report install counts for that type. An honest weaker signal beats a fabricated stronger one, and stars still separate Scrapling at 71,400 from an unstarred fork.
Signal three: who published it
The publisher sits in every row: vercel-labs, anthropics, metabase, ChromeDevTools. The same lock-in logic this site applies to hosted tools applies to agent packages: an org-backed repository can still be abandoned, but it fails slower and louder than an anonymous one.
- Prefer packages whose publisher you could name without the directory.
- Read the install count against the published median, not in isolation.
- Treat a missing 30-day update as a question to answer, not a dealbreaker by itself.
