synthesize_skills: consensus as an alternative to choosing

This site's whole premise is that choosing between tools is work worth doing carefully. The Skillselion MCP ships a tool that sidesteps the choice in a specific, narrow case: synthesize_skills takes the top five community skills matching your task and merges their key rules into one deduplicated digest, with every rule tagged to the skill it came from.
The narrow case matters. For a hosted product you must pick one: you cannot run two billing systems half-and-half. But skills are instructions, and instructions can be merged. Where five well-ranked sources agree on a rule, that agreement is stronger evidence than any single author's confidence.
Why provenance is the feature
A merged playbook without attribution would be slop: confident, sourceless, unverifiable. The design choice that makes synthesize_skills defensible is that every merged rule keeps its source tag, so the output reads like a citation-backed survey rather than an opinion. When the top sources disagree, the disagreement is visible instead of silently averaged away.
That is the same standard we hold comparison pages to on this site: a recommendation you cannot trace is a recommendation you cannot trust.
When to synthesize and when to still pick one
The switching-cost math stays friendly throughout: the server is MIT-licensed, read-only, needs no account or API key, and per its documentation never sends your code or files anywhere. Trying it costs one npx command; leaving costs deleting one line of config.
- Synthesize for practices: coding conventions, review checklists, design rules, anywhere agreement across sources is itself the signal.
- Pick one for dependencies: a skill that ships scripts or bundled files your workflow will call is a dependency, and dependencies need one canonical source.
- Check the runner-ups either way: load_skill returns ranked alternates, which is this site's methodology built into a tool.
