Cowork vs Claude Code: which Anthropic tool for which job

Claude Cowork and Claude Code are both Anthropic agents on the same subscription, but they are not substitutes. Claude Code is a terminal coding agent; Cowork delegates multi-step knowledge work across files, calendar, email and connected tools, and now runs on web and mobile.

This comparison confuses people because there is no price to compare. Anthropic's pricing page lists both Claude Code and Claude Cowork as included from the Pro plan upward (claude.com/pricing, checked 28 July 2026). You are not choosing which to buy. You are choosing which surface to open for a given task, and getting that wrong wastes more time than picking the wrong vendor would.

What is the actual difference in scope?

Claude Code runs in a terminal, inside a repository, and its unit of work is a code change. Cowork takes a task and works across your files, calendar, email, messaging and the other tools you connect until the job is done, per Anthropic's own description of the product.

Anthropic reported that when it examined how people use Cowork, more than 90% of the usage was not software development. That single number is the cleanest way to understand the split: Cowork was built for the work that is not a repository.

Where does each one run?

That hosting difference is the real decision axis. Work that must not leave your machine belongs in the terminal agent. Work you want to hand off and check from a phone belongs in the hosted one.

Claude Code: your machine, your shell, your repository. Execution is local and you see every command it wants to run.
Cowork: launched on desktop in January 2026, and on 7 July 2026 Anthropic announced web and mobile beta access, starting with Max subscribers. Remote sessions run on Anthropic's servers, so a scheduled task continues after you close the app.

Which one should you open for a given task?

Refactor, bug fix, test suite, migration script: Claude Code. The repository is the context.
Research across a folder of documents, draft a deck, reconcile a spreadsheet against email: Cowork.
A task that starts in documents and ends in code: start in Cowork, hand the specification to Claude Code. Do not try to make either one do the whole arc.
Anything with a hard data-residency constraint: the local terminal agent, because the hosted sessions run on the vendor's infrastructure.

Does either one replace a coding subscription you already pay for?

Claude Code can, if you are currently paying separately for a coding assistant and also paying for Claude. That is the substitution most worth pricing: one subscription that covers both chat and coding against two subscriptions that split them.

Cowork replaces nothing so cleanly. It competes with the manual hour, not with a line item, which makes it much harder to justify by cancelling something. Evaluate it on tasks you currently do by hand.
